Reflecting on ASET 2023

Leisha Osburn, CEO of Next Gen Neuro, as she shares stories, congratulates colleagues, and reflects on this year's ASET 2023 Annual Conference.

Last week was the 2023 Annual ASET Conference. We were fortunate enough to have 4 team members attending, myself, Barbara Shields, Cara Tumminello and Danny Fletcher.

Giving Thanks to the Team & ASET Family

This year is a busy one for Next Gen Neuro and just a few of us were able to slip away to attend. Thursday morning, I found myself pondering how I was possibly going to complete a large booth setup just a few hours away from the exhibit hall opening, it didn’t take long for members of our extended ASET family to offer a helping hand!  Thanks so much to John Crawford from Zeto for pitching in to set up our large display banner! (Don’t tell Amanda, I told her I did it all by myself😂!) And before I knew it, Pat Trudeau from Neurovative was setting up tables and putting out flyers! And then the booth was ready, and people started flowing in as the exhibit hall opened.  I soon realized that I wasn’t keeping up with questions from folks and once again, just in time one of my teammates, Danny showed up and volunteered to help throughout the break with exhibitors, and when the afternoon break rolled around Barb traded places with Danny to provide help again!  The next day, Cara did a wonderful job recruiting potential work colleagues as well😊. And then before I knew it, we were breaking down our booths after a wonderful event.  And boy did I have a lot to break down and pack up😅!  This time it was Magdalena Warzecha from Neurotech to the rescue!  Many, many thanks to each of you for making light the work and brightening each day with your kind help!

This is one of the most wonderful things that ASET has given me through the years—a network of wonderful people-friends, teammates, and colleagues who are always happy to pitch in, support, collaborate, and share joys, sorrows, and accomplishments with through all the years.

Congratulations!

I’d like to congratulate Danny Fletcher, who attended his first ASET conference and gave an excellent presentation covering QEEG and Vasospasm. His excitement to engage with colleagues to drive the field forward is exactly what these conferences are all about. We are excited to see him at future events!

With Much Gratitude. What I Appreciated Most about this ASET Conference was a Very Special Topic

After taking time to reflect on the conference, what I appreciated most about the ASET conference was the recurring theme of transparency in personal struggles woven into talks addressing the importance of mental health and wellness. These brave individuals shared their stories to help us hear this message much more clearly.

The message is that we all need to take an active role in identifying and assisting colleagues who may be struggling. We and our employers need to find proactive ways to support these individuals, no matter the cause of their challenges. Additionally, it is especially important for us to identify processes, communications, and other ways in which we and our employers may actively be contributing to these challenges. Only then can we all act to support our colleagues and ourselves, through targeted changes and improvements.

I am very grateful to ASET for embracing this conversation, and to each of you who shared your journeys with us.

We are excited to continue learning together, exploring important ideas, and driving forward the next generation of neurodiagnostic. See you all next year!

Next Gen Neuro Awarded Ambulatory Care-Telehealth Accreditation from The Joint Commission

(INDIANAPOLIS, IN, June 25, 2021) – Next Gen Neuro has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Ambulatory Care-Telehealth Accreditation by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. The Gold Seal is a symbol of quality that reflects a health care organization’s commitment to providing safe and quality patient care.

Next Gen Neuro underwent a rigorous onsite review on June 25th, 2021. During the visit, a Joint Commission surveyor evaluated compliance with Ambulatory Care-Telehealth standards spanning several areas including emergency management, environment of care, human resources and leadership, performance improvement and rights and responsibilities of the individual.

The Joint Commission’s standards are developed in consultation with health care experts and providers, measurement experts and patients. They are informed by scientific literature and expert consensus to help health care organizations measure, assess and improve performance. The surveyors also conducted onsite observations and interviews.

“As a private accreditor, The Joint Commission surveys health care organizations to protect the public by identifying deficiencies in care and working with those organizations to correct them as quickly and sustainably as possible,” says Mark Pelletier, RN, MS, chief operating officer, Accreditation and Certification Operations, and chief nursing executive, The Joint Commission. “We commend Next Gen Neuro for its continuous quality improvement efforts in patient safety and quality of care.”

“Achieving the Gold Seal of Approval from the Joint Commission confirms Next Gen Neuro’s commitment to the organizations we serve and their patients,” said Leisha Osburn, CEO of Next Gen Neuro. “I am proud of our exceptional team of registered EEG technologists, reading physicians, neurodiagnostic assistants and administrative staff who are committed to providing reliable, high-quality care. I believe it says a lot about our team and the processes we’ve put in place that we passed our survey on the first attempt with no requirements for improvement.”

To prepare for The Joint Commission’s accreditation process, Next Gen Neuro diligently worked to align policies and procedures to Joint Commission standards to ensure full compliance. Next Gen Neuro’s administrative and clinical team collaborated to create performance improvement initiatives while continuously providing high quality patient care.

From Air Force to Owner

Like many people in our field, I came to Neurodiagnostics in a round-about sort of way. I began my adult career as a cadet at the US Air Force Academy, focused on mastering Russian, completing a computer science degree, and looking forward to a career of service, filled with travel and cold war missions. A year later, a training accident landed me in tong traction with a broken neck, awaiting surgery at Bethesda Naval Hospital (the military mecca of neurosurgery at the time). After surgery, a halo, and months of rehab behind and ahead of me, I begged my doctors to give me something to do.

“Well, we bought this machine” Dr. Early, the chairman of Neurosurgery said.  “The machine is supposed to measure evoked potentials for us in real-time during brain surgery, but we can’t find anyone to run it because its computer requires programing to make it do the real-time part…”. And so, my long and rewarding career in this field began, with my introduction to a Nicolet Med 80 and a couple of articles describing intraoperative monitoring. The year was 1982.

Bethesda Naval Hospital, Department of Neurosurgery 1982-1983

Bethesda Naval Hospital, Department of Neurosurgery 1982-1983

The next year I received a medical discharge from the Air Force and accepted a job in Denver learning how to perform clinical EEGs, while developing an intraoperative monitoring program.

My passion for this field and my commitment to seeing us grow as a profession, eventually led to my involvement with ASET, and I was honored to serve as a board member and later, as president from 2009-2011. I had also transitioned to an administrative role in my career, working as the director of Neurophysiology at IU Health in Indianapolis. During that same time, in 2008-2009 with the support of a great team, we launched a first of its kind real-time, continuous ICU cEEG monitoring program staffed by registered EEG technologists, 24/7/365.

That incredible experience, seeing all the patients and families we impacted through provision of these cEEG monitoring services at multiple IU Health hospital locations, eventually led me to the position I held last year when COVID-19 changed the world.

At the end of 2019, with the help of the 4 courageous young ladies pictured here, we launched Next Gen Neuro, LLC with a passion to help hospitals large and small across the country provide cEEG monitoring remotely for their patients, so they can receive the care they need in place, close to the support of their loved ones.

Patient Frequently Asked Questions

Patient FAQ Banner.png

How will an EEG help me?

An EEG test looks at electrical activity of the brain. It is the gold standard in diagnosing seizure activity. It is also commonly used to evaluate head trauma, brain infections, and other neurological disorders.

Will an EEG hurt?

An EEG test is a completely painless and safe procedure. Before the EEG recording begins, a special paste is used to secure small disc electrodes to the head. During the EEG, you won’t feel any type of tingling or sensation from the electrodes.

Once the EEG recording is completed, the electrodes are removed slowly using a damp cloth. If a longer than 2-hour EEG recording is requested, which is often referred to as continuous EEG (cEEG), the EEG electrodes are commonly secured using a special hair glue. Once the cEEG recording is complete, a special adhesive remover is used to take off the cEEG electrodes.

How long does an EEG/cEEG recording last for?

Typically, EEG recordings last between 20 minutes to 1 hour. Additionally, cEEG recordings may last up to 72 hours.

What does the brainwave activity look like on an EEG?

Each person has unique brain activity so EEG results can mean different things from person to person. Certain waveforms or activity on an EEG are normal, while others may be within normal limits, and some can be abnormal.

Common terms used for an EEG include spikes and sharp waves. Depending on if they are happening all the time or in certain areas of the brain, it could mean there is a possible area of seizure activity. A Physician that specializes in seizures will read the EEG recording and provide an official interpretation.

What do the results of an EEG mean?

An EEG detects the electrical activity of the brain and displays it on an EEG computer. If someone has a seizure during an EEG test, the change can be seen on the computer and the Reading Physician is notified.

Where can I find support groups?

You can visit the Epilepsy Foundation for more resources about EEG and other neurological testing: www.epilepsy.com/affiliates

I need an EEG, now what?

Please consult a doctor if you believe you need neurological testing, such as an EEG.

Next Gen Neuro partners with healthcare facilities across the U.S. to provide continuous & intermittent remote cEEG & EEG monitoring service solutions.

Taking Care of Family: How Next Gen Neuro Helps Our Employees During COVID-19

Next Gen Neuro - Helping Our Employees.jpg

Helping Employees During COVID-19

Next Gen Neuro was developed with the desire to create a workplace where trust and transparency are valued in all interactions. We strive every day to create a safe environment for our employees to share challenges and opportunities from their perspectives. NGN is taking extra measures to ensure employees are considered, respected and appreciated during this pandemic.

The Next Gen Leadership Team has committed to the support of our team by finding ways to safeguard their health and well-being through the development of policies and programs to support them through this devastating time. We successfully implemented two of these policies at the end of March and are finalizing a third policy that will aid employees during any time of hardship.  These policies and benefits have been extended to all our employees, including those who fill per diem positions.

PRN Clinical Staff COVID-19 Special Project Policy

Through this policy we have offered our PRN employees the opportunity to shift gears to contribute differently in replacement of hours they may have typically worked to cover currently restricted elective patient care.  The work they are contributing aligns directly with our belief in the value of providing all our team members with the tools and resources to grow their knowledge and expertise in brainwave monitoring at the highest levels.

COVID-19 Paid Leave Policy

COVID-19 has changed lives, locally, nationally and internationally. NGN has made the choice, in the best interest of our employees, to opt in for the COVID-19 paid leave policy.

Employee Hardship Policy

Our NGN Leadership team is also working to implement a broader, permanent policy to help our employees during any time of great hardship. Life happens, and we want our team to know we are there for them during the most challenging times.

Caring for our employees is always our top priority, especially during unprecedented times. Our team is the reason Next Gen Neuro can provide excellent, quality care for our customers and their patients. If you are interested in implementing similar policies within your own organization, please give us a call!  And of course, anytime you would like information about our remote EEG & cEEG monitoring services, please feel free to reach out to us at info@teamngn.com or give us a call at 1-833-EEG-CEEG, ext. 2.

Work From Home Tips During the COVID-19 Quarantine

Next Gen Neuro - Tips for Working From Home 2.jpg

The Coronavirus Pandemic has caused many people to leave their workplace and instead work from home. Some cities and states have mandated “Shelter in Place” policies requiring many employees to stay home for the safety of their health while still maintaining work-related productivity.

Next Gen Neuro is a 100% remotely staffed organization. From our interns, to our clinicians, and all the way to the CEO, we understand how difficult the transition can be when you are not used to working from home. We would like to offer a few tips to help you during this difficult time.

Tips For Working From Home

Even though working from home has kept people from spreading or obtaining the virus, there have been a few disadvantages to this lifestyle shift:

  • Communication between coworkers and customers who are not used to connecting fully remote are feeling a strain in relationship management

  • Feeling lonely can became a consequence of working from home, where interactions with others are limited to the virtual world.

  • Followed by depression and lack of motivation due to loneliness, which causes a drop in the quality of work.

Be Articulate When Communicating Digitally

There are a few simple ways in which to overcome these obstacles during this pandemic. Talking to someone through a digital platform is not the same as talking to a person face to face. There is a lot of nonverbal information that is non-accessible when talking to someone on a digital platform; therefore, it is important to be as clear as possible when articulating your thoughts and ideas.

Create Structure in Your Daily Routine

It is a good idea to structure your day in order to keep your mind and body healthy. Other than blocking out time for work, also schedule time for exercising or enjoying a hobby. Designate a place in your home where your mind can associate that location with work. This makes it easier to get work done at home, which is typically emotionally associated with relaxation.

Check-in with Your Team Regularly

Creating regular check-ins between management and teams is an effective way of ensuring employees have a regular time to voice concerns, ask questions, and give feedback about daily tasks. Daily check-ins also help build a stronger cohesion with your team during a time when you are apart.  TeamNGN uses Go-To-Meeting and Microsoft Teams to have video chats, which keeps our team feeling more connected.

Never Underestimate the Importance of Having Fun

Working from home during a crisis can be incredibly stressful; especially for employees that thrive off of a social dynamic. It is important to help employees focus on tasks and remain professional. It is equally important, however, to ensure employees have a way to relieve stress and have fun.

Add a “watercooler” style group chat where employees can have non-work related conversations or add funny pictures or memes to brighten everyone’s spirits. Our team discusses non-work related topics on our internal social media page, and we send out a weekly email with fun updates and memes! You can also incorporate daily or weekly competitions or games to build team cohesion while relieving stress.

For more information about our remote cEEG & EEG monitoring services and how Next Gen Neuro can help your hospital run more efficiently and effectively during this crisis, please call 1-833-EEG-cEEG or contact us today.
